Technical Tips
Grip and Lay Edges - Up to SRA3 - With grip edge at top of sheet, lay edge to be right edge. Above SRA3 lay edge to be left edge.
Varnishes and Coatings The basic requirements for foil blocking are that all areas to be foil blocked must be wax free with a surface tension of 38 dynes or above per square cm., below 36 may be unfoilable. It is not yet possible to foil block onto a spot UV varnish, so, if a spot UV varnish is required please ensure that the area to be foiled is some 5mm from the UV varnish or alternatively UV varnish after foiling.
If sealing a printed job we recommend an aqueous sealant rather than a solvent based one.
Foiling is achievable on gloss and matt varnishes largely due to the constant development of foils by the manufacturers, but the safest bet as a printer, if you are in any doubt is to contact your local factory where our experienced staff are on hand to answer any queries.
Probably the best solution with coatings and varnishes is to get a sample of the paper/varnish and send it to your local Blockfoil factory where we will be more than happy to carry out a number of foil tests and advise you accordingly on what is the best route for you to take.
Solving a potential foiling problem before a print run using Blockfoil's expertise and that of the foil manufacturers can save both time in production and more importantly time and money on a reprint.

4. CD Rom - As with floppy disks it should be in mac format.
5. Photocopies - Are definitely not to be recommended as copiers will distort the image producing poor definition and wrong sizing

i. Your file should be black and white line artwork with a specified foil blocking area , same size and remember to attach all fonts and pictures.
ii Your format should be: Mac - QuarkXPress, Freehand, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop.
iii. Ipswich ISDN number 01473 707226
If you have any queries regarding the ISDN link do not hesitate to contact Tony Barber or Alexandra Wardell at the Ipswich studio on 01473 707224 who will be happy to answer your queries.
Foils and Foiling One of the most common problems we at Blockfoil come across is reversing the foil area out of the print, so, to assist with registration and fit do not reverse the foil area out of the print - after all, foils are opaque and will cover any print underneath.
Foils can be applied to a number of surfaces ranging from paper to card or book cloth to Baladek, stationery or labels. As with everything though some substrates are not recommended for foiling. For example , polypropylene or as foiling is heat based - candles!
If at all unsure, do not hesitate to call your Blockfoil factory for the best advice, or indeed a visit from our experienced sales team.
